Hello,

I’m Michaela, a product designer originally from Slovakia, and currently based in Copenhagen. Over the past seven years, I’ve worked in design studios and tech companies, contributing to a range of projects such as design systems, websites, mobile apps and visual identities.

I started my career as a graphic designer focused on branding and later transitioned into product design, specializing in UI design, user experience and design systems.

I worked on projects for:

How I can help

I help teams build scalable design systems, refine user interfaces, and bring structure to workflows.

I combine creativity with strategic thinking to craft designs that are
visually compelling, functional, and aligned with business goals.

How I approach design

I believe good design often goes unnoticed, not because it’s invisible, but because it simply works. When things feel natural, users don’t have to think twice. I care about finding the right balance between subtlety and clarity. Some moments should stay in the background. Others should make a statement.

Working with design systems taught me that structure is not the enemy of creativity. When used well, systems help us spend less time reinventing and more time solving what matters.

For me, good design isn’t about trends or pride of authorship. It’s about solving real problems and creating something useful and timeless, together as a team.

My career path

As this ever-changing industry, my career has had its twists and turns.

I’ve always known I wanted to do something creative, which led me to art studies in high school, where I discovered graphic and web design. I continued with multimedia design in higher education, learning about product design and web development. During my studies, I picked up HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, which sparked my interest in the technical side of design and how it functions.

Later, I completed my bachelor’s degree in Design & Business, focusing on strategic design and branding. While studying, I took on small freelance graphic design projects. Then I interned at the digital agency Vertic, where I transitioned from a student role to a full-time digital designer, working on web and print projects mostly for the pharmaceutical industry.

That’s also when I was introduced to design systems. As someone who values organization and structure, I quickly became the go-to person for keeping projects clean and well-structured. I also interned at the tech startup Whyser, where I contributed to developing their visual identity and website. After that, I worked as an in-house designer at the software company eloomi, where I designed, built, and maintained their website using WordPress CMS.

Looking for a bigger challenge, I transitioned to the UI/UX field and joined Shape as a product designer. That’s where I shifted from web design to working on a native mobile app for iOS and Android. I spent most of my time on a utility app for car owners, gaining valuable experience in UX by focusing on usability and improving complex user flows. I was part of a team dedicated to modernizing the app’s experience, refining the UI, and making key interactions smoother.

After taking almost a year off to recharge and explore new perspectives, I’m now looking for an exciting opportunity where I can apply my experience in UI/UX, design systems, and branding to create meaningful digital experiences.

Beyond the screen

When I’m not designing, I turn to photography to slow down.

It helps me notice the quiet moments, the play of light and shadow, the beauty in the overlooked. I love to travel when I can, often drawn to places where nature stretches wide and time feels slower.

I find joy in solitude, in slow mornings with a cup of tea, in good meals, and in crafts made by hand. I'm an animal lover at heart, always happiest when there's a furry companion nearby.

Curiosity guides me. I read to understand people and the past, often through philosophy, psychology, history, or art. I’m fascinated by cultures and the ways we express what matters.

Architecture inspires me, from ancient ruins to clean, functional spaces. I’m a bit of a maximal minimalist, drawn to both simplicity and character. I find endless inspiration in mid-century design, vintage prints, and the clarity of Swiss typography. Creativity, for me, isn’t just work. It’s how I live and see the world.

UI/UX Designer

Shape -- Native app development studio

Full-time

Copenhagen, Denmark

I worked on redesigning OK’s utility app for iOS and Android, a product for car owners. I led the design of user flows from ideation to final implementation, focusing on modernizing the core experiences of a legacy product and building a design system from scratch. At the time, OK was the studio’s largest product and had been on the market for several years. I joined the team to bring clarity, structure, and consistency to the app.

A key milestone was the introduction of a new home tab, the biggest structural change in the app’s history. This update reshaped how users navigated and interacted with the app, and focused on improving accessibility, ensuring the app was easier to use for a wider range of users. I worked on the version-one release, which carefully balanced a new direction with legacy UI. I often balanced short-term delivery needs with long-term design goals, working with the new visual identity while still using legacy UI for urgent updates. I collaborated closely with the Creative Director to ensure consistency and alignment with broader goals. While I led hands-on design work such as building flows, creating components, and organizing files, we worked together on strategic decisions and big-picture alignment.

To improve collaboration, I restructured Figma files, created documentation for components and user flows, and introduced a clearer handover process. These practices were later partially adopted across other projects. I also maintained the design system, introduced reusable components and templates, and supported faster development cycles. As part of the design process, I wrote product microcopy and performed QA across iOS and Android to ensure the product functioned and looked as intended. Throughout the process, I actively sought and incorporated feedback from peers and the client to refine and improve the designs. Over time, I developed a deep understanding of the app’s complexity, including how changes in one part affected the rest. This helped me design with the bigger picture in mind and maintain cohesion across flows and features.

As an in-house designer, I supported marketing and sales by creating customer-facing materials like brochures, interactive PDFs, blog illustrations, landing pages, social media visuals, and YouTube thumbnails. I designed and built responsive web pages in WordPress, handling CMS challenges, managing plugins, and applying custom code tweaks to fit specific design needs. I introduced a new illustration style to enhance the existing visual identity and helped organize the design team’s workflow. Everything I designed, I was responsible for developing as well.

Junior Digital Designer

Vertic -- Digital studio

Full-time

Copenhagen, Denmark

I began my design career at Vertic, where I progressed from intern to student designer, and eventually to a full-time role while completing my studies. I collaborated with Art Directors on a range of projects, from web-based experiences to print advertising. Over time, shifted focus to building corporate websites and design systems, translating wireframes into intuitive user interfaces. Most projects were for major pharmaceutical clients across the American and European markets, including Eli Lilly, Roche, Novo Nordisk, and more.

Played a key role in a large-scale web platform project for ROCKWOOL, where I worked alongside senior designers to build and maintain the design system. I was responsible for designing responsive layouts across breakpoints and ensuring consistency, scalability, and clean file organization. In the final phase, I led the design handover and ensured deadlines were met. I also introduced new tools and workflows that improved the design team’s efficiency, output, and organization.

The collaboration began as an internship, where I helped establish the company’s visual identity and created brand materials for internal and external use. I redesigned and developed their website using Wix, improving the information architecture and user experience to present the brand more professionally. I also created a new logo, updated their social media channels with consistent branding, and introduced a clearer visual direction.

Later, as part of my bachelor’s thesis, I worked closely with the founders to explore how the brand could be extended into their SaaS platform. I conducted in-depth market research and analysis, and developed a comprehensive brand strategy. I also expanded the brand guidelines to support long-term consistency and alignment, including how the visual identity translates into the software platform’s UI.

Freelance Graphic Designer

Copenhagen, Denmark

This was my first attempt to gain design experience and start working with real clients. I took on small freelance projects through my network and briefly used platforms like Upwork. I created visual solutions for logos, posters, banners, illustrations, wedding invitations, and flyers. These early projects helped me build confidence, learn how to work with clients, and apply design skills in real-world contexts.
